Project Overview

MTF Ltd was appointed by Huber Parking UK to deliver a specialist resin flooring system for the new multi-storey car park at Royal Derby Hospital. The facility provides over 800 new parking bays, including 94 accessible bays and 20 EV charging bays, marking a huge improvement on the hospital’s previous parking situation, which had long been inadequate for both staff and visitors.

This new parking structure will greatly ease congestion on site, provide a more organised flow of traffic, and improve accessibility for everyone visiting the hospital.

Pre-Start Survey & Testing

Before any work began, MTF Ltd carried out a thorough pre-start concrete test survey, a vital step to ensure the long-term performance and safety of the flooring systems. Pre-start testing is not just a formality—it allows our team to identify potential issues early, plan the installation process accurately, and prevent costly delays or system failures once the project is underway.

Using the CMEX Tramex Moisture Meter, we measured the moisture content within the concrete slab. Excess moisture can compromise resin adhesion, lead to blistering or delamination, and significantly reduce the lifespan of the installed system. By establishing moisture levels upfront, we were able to confirm that the concrete was within acceptable limits, ensuring optimal conditions for the resin coatings.

In parallel, we assessed the concrete surface strength using the Elcometer Schmidt Hammer, which provides an immediate indication of the compressive strength and integrity of the substrate. This step is crucial because any weak or compromised areas could affect the structural support for the resin system, potentially leading to premature failure.

By investing time and attention in pre-start testing, we ensured the foundation of the project was robust, giving confidence that subsequent surface preparation and resin installation would deliver a long-lasting, high-performance result.

Surface Preperation

Surface preparation was one of the most critical phases of this project, as the long-term performance and integrity of the Sikafloor systems rely heavily on how well the substrate is prepared. Even the highest-quality resin systems can fail if the concrete surface is not properly prepared, making this stage crucial for the success of the project.

For this project, we used our Preptec S750 Shotblaster, a high-performance floor preparation machine specifically designed for large-scale commercial projects. The S750 provides several key advantages:

· Consistent Surface Profiling: The machine removes weak surface layers, laitance, and contaminants uniformly, creating the ideal texture for resin adhesion.

· Adjustable Blasting Pressure: Allows precise control over the depth of the blast, ensuring the correct surface profile for both internal and roof deck areas.

· High Productivity: Capable of processing large areas quickly, which was essential for a project of this scale (over 18,500 m² combined internal and roof surfaces).

· Edge and Corner Detailing: Equipped with attachments to reach edges and tight areas, ensuring the entire surface is fully prepared without compromising quality.

· Dust Control: Integrated vacuum system minimises dust on site, maintaining a cleaner work environment and reducing contamination risk for subsequent coatings.

Our team operated the S750 in carefully planned stages to ensure even, uniform preparation across all levels. Every joint, edge, and hard-to-reach area was attended to meticulously, guaranteeing a consistent profile for the resin to adhere to.

System Installation

Following meticulous surface preparation, we installed Sikafloor EB-14 UV across the internal parking levels, covering 13,640 m², and Sikafloor 2214 UV on the roof deck, covering 4,925 m². Both systems were chosen for their durability, UV stability, and resistance to heavy traffic—ideal for a hospital environment.

Throughout the installation, our team implemented a rigorous, daily Quality Assurance (QA) process to ensure the highest standards were consistently maintained. Each day, we:

• Recorded QA checks systematically, documenting every aspect of the installation.

• Closely monitored site conditions, including temperature, humidity, and moisture levels, which are critical to the curing and adhesion of resin systems.

• Checked surface profiles, resin mixing, and application thickness, ensuring the systems met the manufacturer’s specifications and project requirements.

• Performed visual and tactile inspections to identify and rectify any minor issues immediately, preventing defects from developing further.

At MTF Ltd, we take extra care and precision at every stage, believing that consistent monitoring and attention to detail is vital for long-term performance. This disciplined approach not only ensures the systems achieve their full lifespan but also gives our clients confidence in the quality and reliability of the finished installation.

Challenges & Collaborations

The works were carried out leading up to the winter months, which brought persistent wet weather and fluctuating temperatures. Despite these challenges, our team worked closely with Huber Parking UK to plan around the conditions, protect prepared areas, and adapt schedules as needed. This collaborative approach ensured that progress remained steady, and the project stayed on programme and on time.

Finishings & Aesthetics

The completed car park now features distinct, vibrant colours that enhance both functionality and aesthetics. Each level and zone is clearly defined, improving wayfinding for users while giving the car park a clean, modern appearance. The contrasting colours complement the structure perfectly and create a professional, high-quality finish.

Outcome & Handover

The project was successfully handed over within the agreed contract programme, meeting all quality expectations. The result is a robust, visually appealing, and highly functional parking facility that will significantly benefit Royal Derby Hospital for years to come.

Both Huber Parking UK and the hospital stakeholders were extremely pleased with the outcome, commending the quality of the finish, our attention to detail, and the professionalism shown throughout the project.
